Apparently GoDaddy has increased the price of the discount domain club from approximately $120 to $240. A quiet doubling of the price LOL. Between this and the $50 closeouts, it seems like GD doesn’t care too much about the average domainer anymore. They also seem to be allowing a monopoly at the expired auctions. Bid on even the most mediocre of domains and 9 times out of 10 someone (or some bot) will jump in with a max bid of $200+. Domains we used to get for $12 or $20 now cost $100s. These domains are not suddenly more sought after or more valuable. Someone has just decided they’re going to completely squash all competition and in the process line GoDaddy’s pockets with extra $. This will definitely kick a lot of us out of the domain game. I’m surviving thus far but just by the skin of my teeth!
Thankfully, as far as the DDC goes, I seem to be grandfathered in @ $120/year, just so long as I don’t let my membership lapse. Then I’d be considered a new customer and have to pay the full amount. I definitely feel bad for newbies though. The bar for entry is getting higher and higher. Really the only reason for the DDC at this point is to reduce the cost of expired domain auction purchases, but when the average domain auction is ending in the hundreds now, it’s becoming somewhat of a moot point..
I’ll say this. I never used to transfer out of GD, and they were my place of choice for hand registrations, now I’m moving elsewhere, such as Dynadot. They offer free privacy and they’re always running promos such as $6.99 .com’s. It’s a shame to see GoDaddy become more and more corrupt and greedy but I suppose that’s inevitable when you’re a publicly traded company with shareholders to answers to. “We need growth, constant growth! INCREASE PROFITS, SCREW THE CUSTOMER!”
/End of rant.
