What’s the purpose of bidding on a domain hours or even days prior to the auction ending? Could it be to draw extra attention? And who would stand to benefit from this? The marketplace? Can’t think of anyone else who would benefit from all the extra eyeballs. Certainly not the bidder/buyer. I’m just wondering what’s the explanation for all this early bidding going on. Is it inexperienced domainers/end users jumping in who don’t understand they’re just making more competition for themselves? Or do these bids represent backorders? Backorder an expiring domain at GoDaddy for example, and it automatically goes to auction with a bid? I suppose that could explain it.
Or maybe it’s just a case of more money than sense. Someone does this in bulk. Bidding early, setting a max/proxy bid and forgetting about it. It just seems like a silly waste of money though. I suppose these days it doesn’t really matter anyway. Because some bot will jump in on most auctions that receive a bid anyway. Still kind of annoying. Oh well! Just thought I would do a quick post, see if anyone else is annoyed by this phenomenon.. Domaining is a frustrating biz for sure! Anyway, have a good day!
